The Brunswick Club at 203, formally The Lyric Theatre

The Lyric Theatre, one of the oldest surviving purpose-built cinemas in Melbourne. Operating from 1911 to 1931, when unfortunately the then lease holders, Hoyts, found they could not afford to wire the sound for both this and their other theatre across the road, the Empire (now Aldi), for “talkies”!

The building was then modified, and became at certain times a dance hall and boxing stadium. Over the years the site has seen some interesting and significant events such as the Unemployed Workers Movement during the 1930s depression, and the much more recent gangland shooting of Lewis Moran in 2004.

Despite modifications to the building over the years, the top floor remains relatively intact, showcasing an example of an Edwardian commercial facade.

203 Sydney Road Brunswick has been the home of the Brunswick Club since 1948.
