History Tour on Sydney Road Brunswick

History Tours

Recognising that Sydney Road Brunswick has a number of sites and locations of historical significance along its 2.5km stretch, the Sydney Road Brunswick Association, in partnership with the Brunswick Community History Group, are delivering a number of walking tours to highlight the many unique and significant historical aspects of our wonderful precinct.

From innovative theatres of yesteryear, significant monuments for justice and remembrance, merchants to the masses, publicans of the day and the everything in between – the historical tours are unveiling the pasts of our precinct.

To be delivered along the entirety of Sydney Road Brunswick, the tours have to date included: Sarah Sands Hotel; Cable Tram Engine House; Barkly Square Shopping Centre; The Brunswick Club; Brunswick Town Hall & Municipal Offices; Brunswick Mechanics Institute; Free Speech Memorial; The Retreat Hotel; St Ambrose Church; The Empire Theatre (now Aldi); Tough’s Ironmongers & Davison’s Grocery Store (now What the Putt); Brunswick Ballroom; Wesleyan Church; Cumberland Arms Hotel (now Tino); Brunswick Post Office (now Penny’s Bandroom & A Little Room for Icecream); The Duke of Edinburgh Hotel; Brunswick Mess Hall; Former Coles; and, Woolworth’s Variety Stores!

With the Anstey (Victoria St to Albion St) and Moreland (Albion St to Moreland Rd) Precincts still to be unveiled, there’s plenty to come – which will be delivered from August.

Attendees not only have the tour itself to look forward to, with each participant receiving a booklet that discusses each stop, but also a free Sydney Road Brunswick tote bag with brochures, and a coffee at the end!
